Scoring Update – Mt. Wilson Post Office

There has been a bit of confusion around the Mt. Wilson Post Office.  GPS coordinates taking some folks to an intersection with some TV/Radio antenna’s.

I have done quite a bit of research – and long story short – this PO shut down about 9 months ago, right near there.  As such, for points, we will award the 2 Post Office points to a photo of the antenna’s.

As a side note (so I don’t have to dig through all the photos), if you took one of these photos – would you please either comment after this update, or email me?  That will be the easiest to make sure your points are awarded.

Scoring Summary, Week 9

I will quietly slip this post in here.  Maybe nobody will notice that there was no summary last week.  Or……maybe it was lost in cyberspace.  Yes, lets go with that one.  It was lost.  Certainly not my fault.

All the scores are up to date now, though.  And, continuing the streak, we have more folks that achieved Finisher Status:  J_Bailey, Heidi_S, and Bo_Martin.  Way to go!

No scoring issues – Doing great folks!

Scoring Summary, Week 7

Being out of town for a few days, the scores were not updated till today.  I was like the Butcher that sat on the meat-grinder – Got a little Behind in my work!

All the scores are up to date now, though.  And, continuing the streak, we have more folks that achieved Finisher Status:  A_Mackey, R_Elliott, and R_Bailey.  Way to go!

Summit Update – Rule Change

We have had an unusual photo submission that is prompting a slight rule change.  But I wanted to share the photo – as this is a unique situation, and it required a lot of thought and discussion.  So, first, the photo:

Chiriaco Summit

So – it fits the letter of the rule – it has a Summit, an Elevation, the Placard, and the Motorcycle.  But the spirit of the rule was road signs.  This prompted some discussion.  Personally, for me, the ingenuity of this rider exemplifies the spirit behind these rallies, and motorcyclists in general.  We ride because we love to ride, to explore, and to be modern-day trailblazers.  This adventurous spirit is something to be prized, to be recognized.  (*end rant*)

Anyways – we are going to accept this summit sign, this one time only.  After this, the following will be applied to the Summit Rules:

  • Summit signs must be DOT signs.
  • These signs must be in their original locations (IE, not loose or hanging on a building, etc).

One other comment – “creative pictures” to circumvent the rules will not be accepted from here on out.  They will be fun to see, but worth nothing.

Thanks for your time – and for your great spirit!

Scoring Update – Oops!

In a rare combination of Scorekeeper error, and cough syrup-induced haze, it appears I have goofed.  But it was a *good* haze.

This weekend, we had one other rider achieve finisher status – mrjimbo.  Congrats!  With a nice ride, great pictures, and for the last several pictures, music lyrics (showing he has a nice taste in music) – we would like to congratulate him in his status!

Oh – and as for the error?  I will blame it on the cough-syrup, man.  Have a great week riding, ya’ll.

Scoring Update, Week 6

It was nice to see, that even as I was under the weather – others were able to get out and enjoy the winter riding.  And – congratulations is in order – blueboy made Finisher status this week.  Way to go!

This week, our BMR Leaders in scoring are (sorted by finisher and pending):

Finisher:

endo, with a score of 235

D_Brand, with a score of 162

JustHoward, with a score of 160

Pending:

R_Elliott, with a score of 113

R_Bailey, with a score of 100

Bo_Martin, with a score of 93

No scoring issues – Doing great folks!

Scoring Update, Week 5

We have had a whole slug of riders make Finisher status this week – Timmer, Mount_Rainier, Ellen_M, and H_Meiseles.  Way to go!

This week, our BMR Leaders in scoring are (sorted by finisher and pending):

Finisher:

endo, with a score of 235

D_Brand, with a score of 162

JustHoward, with a score of 160

Pending:

blueboy, with a score of 106

A_Mackey, with a score of 91

Bo_Martin, with a score of 89

A couple scoring issues to bring up – Border Crossing photo’s.  I hate to bring this one up, again.  But we are still getting photo’s that do not clearly show that they are (South or North) of the border.  We are looking for clear pictures showing you have crossed the border.  Generally, signage showing the city name, or a government building, are the best way to prove where you are.  Please take the time to ride to the town and get a good picture, rather than a picture of the border crossing.

Second issue – just a reminder – Night time photo’s are tricky, especially taken by cell phones.  Movement, lighting, reflections, can all make a picture that would turn out fine during the day, turn out badly at night.  When taking these photo’s in the dark, please take your time (and take extras, if you aren’t sure of the quality).

Thanks – and enjoy the rest of the rally!

Scoring Update, Week 4

Nice riding this week – some places visited that I didn’t think we would see til later in the season.  Also impressive – we have our third rider to achieve FINISHER status – D_Brand!  Nice job!

This week, our BMR Leaders in scoring are (sorted by finisher and pending):

Finisher:

endo, with a score of 187

JustHoward, with a score of 138

D_Brand, with a score of 136

Pending:

Ellen_M and H_Meiseles, tied with a score of 117

blueboy, with a score of 106

A_Mackey, with a score of 91

A couple scoring issues to bring up – Border Crossing photo’s.  We are looking for clear pictures showing you have crossed the border.  Generally, signage showing the city name, or a government building, are the best way to prove where you are.

Second issue – just a reminder – Make sure before you visit a National Park that it actually *is* a National Park.  Case in point – Fort Vancouver is a *site*, run by the National Park Service.  It doesn’t count as a park.

You all are doing great!  Thanks for making scoring easy for Andrew and myself.

Scoring Update, Week 3

This week has been a lot of fun to vicariously live through everyone’s rides.  Some nice mileage racked up, too.  Very impressive!  Also impressive – we have our second rider to achieve FINISHER status – endo!  Nice job!

This week, our BMR Leaders in scoring are:

endo, with a score of 148

JustHoward, with a score of 130

D_Brand, with a score of 118 (somehow missed from this mornings update – but never forgotten!)

blueboy, with a score of 106

A_Mackey, with a score of 83

Only one scoring issue to bring up – We are seeing a few pictures come through where folks are sending a photo of their placard by the Post Office sign, because the sign is not readable from the photo near their bike.  While this is nice of you to consider – it means the photo lacks one of the three items needed in the photo – the motorcycle.  As scoring officials, we would rather see all three important items (bike, signage, and placard) and ask for clarification, than have a missing item, and have to DQ the photo.

Other than that – way to go, folks!

Center of the World UPDATE

Just an update to the folks following this issue.  We saw a few photos similar to this one:  http://archive.bigmoneyrally.com/2012/?p=5096   These are not acceptable, for scoring.  They are great photo’s, and should be taken and shared using the “No Points” side of the placard.  We are looking for the Post Office at Center of the World, zip code 92283 – which is the Felicity Post Office.

Blueboy has the best examples of photo’s.  Originally, he submitted this photo:  http://archive.bigmoneyrally.com/2012/?p=3465  which shows the placard and the sign, but not motorcycle.  Apparently, this Post Office is located a ways away from the parking lot, so allowances had to be made.  After discussion, we decided that photo’s like this one: http://archive.bigmoneyrally.com/2012/?p=3548  (also by Blueboy) is an acceptable and score-able photo.

Thanks for your patience, folks, as we figured this one out in the background.

Scoring Summary, Week 2

I must say – with all the winter weather we have in the past week or so – I am impressed that as many folks have been able to amass the scores they have.  Way to go, folks!

This week, our BMR Leaders in scoring are:

blueboy, with a score of 109

endo, with a score of 81

Bo_Martin, with a score of 67

jphilipson, with a score of 64

Only one scoring issue to bring up – the Post Office at Center of the World, zip code 92283.  Quite a few pictures of signs of the area – and they look nice.  But we are looking for the Post Office in this location.

Other than that – way to go, folks!

Scoring Summary, Week 1

We have had a great opening week, to the Big Money Rally!  A huge round of congratulations goes to everyone.

As Scorekeeper, I wanted to have a short summary of scoring every week.  This will consist of a few things.  First, it will be sent out and posted Sunday Evening.  When it posts, you can know, as rally riders, that all photos posted before 1700MST (Utah time)  have been tallied.  If you have a question with your score, this is a distinct cut-off for you to reference by. If you have any questions, feel free to drop me a message at BMR_Scorekeeper@bigmoneyrally.com.

Secondly, each week I will list the top three point leaders.  this will give everyone something to aim for.

Lastly, I will cover any scoring issues we are having, or clarifications to scoring.

This week, our BMR Leaders in scoring are:

JustHoward, with a score of 126 – our first Finisher, and in only 3 days!

Bo_Martin, with a score of 53

jphilipson, with a score of 52

P_Bansen, with a score of 51

There are a couple scoring issues we have seen early on.  Keep in mind – this rally is designed to have get you out riding in the winter weather, and have fun while doing so.  As such, we knew going into this that we as scorekeepers would have to be flexible.  And that being said, 95% of the pictures coming in are great.  They have the three things we are looking for – Signage from the Post Office, the motorcycle, and the placard, all within the photo.  Some folks are even going to the trouble of identifying the photo when they post it.  For scoring, I can testify that doing so, while not necessary, makes my job a *lot* easier.

Couple things to watch out for, though.  We have seen a few photos come in where the wrong side of the placard is used (IE, the NO POINTS side).  Folks that have done this have been notified, but the pictures still counted.  That will not be the case for any photo’s that post after this message.  Pictures that use the wrong side of the placard, from now on, will be just that – worth NO POINTS, and be pretty pictures of nice locations.

Another thing to watch is the Summit signs.  Signs that say Pass, or anything else, will not be counted.  It must say Summit, and have an elevation.

Third thing to watch is the National Park bonus.  Without going into a lot of detail – the updated rules, along with an example of what will not count, is found here:  http://archive.bigmoneyrally.com/2012/?p=3997#comment-878.

Last thing has to do with the Pioneer, CA Post Office referred to here:  http://archive.bigmoneyrally.com/2012/?p=4380#comment-880.  The address given is:

32161 Kit Carson Road, Pioneer, CA 95666

I understand the confusion too – there is no street in Pioneer named ‘Kit Carson Road’.  However, if you Google it (http://bit.ly/xhX9b5) or search on the USPS website (http://bit.ly/AnqZdI) you will find that the Post Office in question exists – though it is approximately 36 miles from the town of Pioneer, CA.  Wonder why?  Me too!  Add to the confusion is that this Post Office is Seasonal.  If you were one of the few trying to visit it, you reached a locked gate.

To eliminate the confusion, we have agreed to do the following – Both Pioneer, CA  Post Office’s will be accepted.  This means the seasonal one (in the Bonus Listings) will be a little harder to get to – make sure you take the Seasonal aspect into consideration when planning.  (If you are one of those that took a photo of the Pioneer PO, please mail me – I need to make sure I got points for you.)

Thanks for the great photo’s and the great enthusiasm!  Makes my job that much easier, knowing you are having fun!  Now, go out and enjoy the rally!
